Local Cooking, Lunch Edition

Sandwiches can usually go one of two ways: they can be super boring or they can be masterpieces. Hopefully this local sandwich  is the latter. And while it may be a grown-up version of a childhood classic, this recipe will still bring out the kid in you. It's kind of like a Choose Your Own Adventure book, only with less paper and more bread.

The  Choose Your Own Sandwich
Makes 1 serving (2 slices each)
Prep time: 5 minutes

Cooking utensils you'll need:
  • Two butter knives for spreading
  • One knife for cutting fruit
Ingredients you'll need:
  • Two slices of Raisin and Rye bread from Bread by Matt (or try Multigrain bread from Dan's Farm)
  • Almond butter, peanut butter or cashew butter (or soy "peanut butter" from Market on Yates as an alternative to nuts)
  • Fig jelly, pear jelly, mango preserves, or any other flavor that appeals to you (Forward Thinking Foods or Oldfield Orchard and Bakery
  • A thin layer of fruit: 1 apple cut into slices (get them from Rosemeade Farms) or 1 pear cut into slices (try Linda's Berry and Fruit Farm )
  • Dried cranberries or golden raisins to sprinkle on top of the nut butter layer (optional)
Directions:
  • Smear, slice, layer, build, cut on the diagonal.
  • Lather, rinse, repeat with other combos of ingredients.
TIP: Try making a side fruit salad with whatever local fruit happens to be in season. Follow this guide to figure out which fruits are available.
